• Kingston Turf Farms is Rhode Island’s original sod farm, started in 1967, by Brian Bouchard. It all started with a small tractor, a roller, some grass seed, and some empty field space. After decades of hard work and long nights perfecting the process, he developed Kingston Turf Farms into the successful business you see today. It came at a price as cutting sod, loading, and unloading was done by hand. As equipment began to progress, so did Brian. He bought harvesters that cut and rolled up the sod, trailers that could hold a truck mounted forklift, and trucks that could haul heavier loads. Brian thought if he raised, harvested, and shipped his own sod, he should be able to install his own sod, anywhere that customers needed it. He gathered up a crew of whomever was willing to work, loaded them in a pickup truck, and started installing his products all over the country.

• Brian was always the innovator, thinking of ways to do things faster and easier. He developed clever ways of loading and unloading sod from trailer trucks with booms and bought and sold some of the very first truck mounted forklifts. Brian made oversized field rollers out of large propane tanks to make fields smoother for cutting and after many years of thought and design, he came up with an idea, which turned out to be one of his greatest accomplishments, a 48” big roll sodcutter that would revolutionize the sod cutting industry. He designed in the shop out of wood, sent it out to Minnesota to a manufacturer, and eventually brought it to market. Brian’s innovative ideas in the agricultural industry were created mostly out of necessity, but later in life became tools for farms to streamline their harvesting and delivering. Brian’s “big roll” sodcutting concept helped give Kingston Turf Farms the opportunities to install large volume sod in some prestigious sports fields: Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Metlife Stadium, Joe Robbie Stadium and many, many more.

• Brian’s many years of farming experience and led him to the Middle East, to build soccer fields in Oman in the middle of the desert. The challenges of transporting products and water to the site were difficult to say the least, but they were no match for Brian’s wit, he got it done! There was no limit to how far Brian would go to prove how great he was at what he so loved to do! When you’re passionate at what you do, it becomes natural. It showed in his fields, his harvested sod, his nicely painted trucks, most importantly in the quality of his sod installations throughout the country.

• Sadly, Brian Bouchard passed away in August of 2024. He left his legacy, Kingston Turf Farms, to his sons and one of his long time employees, knowing full well we had his same passion at heart.

• We have continued to uphold Brian’s highest standards, his strong work ethic, and have stayed true to his passion: beautiful sod, nice, neat equipment and trucks, a professional appearance, and most of all, a superior finished product for our customers to enjoy.
